IWD2019: #BalanceforBetter

“Where there is a woman there is magic.” – Ntozake Shange, American Playwright

Today is International Women’s Day! 👩🏻‍💼👷‍♀🧘🏾‍♀️ Did you know that many of our brands are women-owned and led? This year’s theme, #BalanceforBetter, aims to forget a more gender-equal world. In support for #IWD2019, some of our merchants have struck this pose in support of this message, and shared with us the women who have inspired and empowered them.

A woman I admire very much is Nancy Pelosi; she’s a story of overcoming the odds. She first ran for office at the age of 47 and overcame gender barriers to rise up to become the House Speaker which is arguably one of the most powerful positions ever held by a woman in US politics. To me, she embodies many qualities that are admirable: empathy, resilience, tenacity amongst others. She’s a great role model not just for women, but for everyone.

I would just like to dedicate this post to my special woman, my pillar of strength and my guiding light – Isabelle, my fiancée. She has supported me in everything that I have accomplished and currently aiming to achieve, always lending her full support and encouragement for me which provides me with that extra boost whenever I face an obstacle. Starting your own business is never easy and to have someone so supportive of an entrepreneurial career really has helped me a lot and adds fuel to my fire. As the cliché saying goes, “behind every successful man, is a strong woman”. I choose to tweak that slightly to “beside every successful man, is a strong woman.”

My mom is one of the strongest women I know – having to balance work and family, while being a constant pillar of strength, supporting the dreams of my siblings and I. She #challengesstereotypes by knowing exactly the buses and roads to take to reach a destination, and is always the first person I turn to for help.

The woman I admire significantly is my mother. She was diagnosed with a rare cancer several years ago, and no one could tell how much time she has left. As the eldest in her large family from a poor fishing village, she remains strong no matter how tough life is and always make sure to put our family’s needs ahead of her own. We are blessed that after trying out several options, a newly developed drug appeared to be positive so far in keeping her condition stable. Despite the pain and weakness, she insists on working as she does not want to be a burden, and her illness did not stop her from cooking and delivering free meals to the elderly without families living in rental housing. She believes in giving no matter how little one has, there is so much we can learn from women like her.
